Rain!

RAIN! Finally we have rain! And a little bit of snow too. There’s that damp coldness in the air that speaks of fall and coming winter. It’s been such a dry year that I’m having a hard time remembering the last time it rained. Yosemite Valley is always beautiful, but I’d forgotten how it’s especially so with clouds hanging on the cliff walls constantly shifting and bringing familiar formations in and out of view. And driving to Mariposa on Tuesday was like literally driving through clouds.

Speaking of Mariposa, I had gone down to renew the registration on my car. Strange to think that I’ve had my CA plates for a full year now. Time flies! I still have my same little VW Golf and I still love it. It handles the winding, steep mountain roads nicely. I’m taking it to Merced on my next weekend to get it’s first ‘major maintenance’ since it’s almost to 40,000 miles. That car’s taken me a lot of places in the 3 years that I’ve had it.

It does not, however, play a part in the fact that I’m a commuter once again. My workplaces are 30-45 minutes by car from my home. Once my schedule settles down, I’m going to spend the fall and first part of the winter splitting my time between a couple of different stores. Half my week will be spent in Yosemite Valley riding the bus in and then bouncing between the museum and Visitor Center. The rest of my week I’ll be driving a company car out to one of our satellite stores. I’m looking forward to getting on familiar terms with different areas of the park, to driving a car that’s not mine (though I still hands-down like mine the best), and generally just keeping things mixed up.

I’ve gotten out of my hiking habit since I’ve been back down at lower elevations. I recall this same trend from last fall. Just seems to be the way of things. Less hiking and less socializing and more reading and more birding. Still not enough hours in the day for all that I want to do and a reasonable amount of sleep though.
